Caion Surf Spot Guide — Galicia, Spain

Caion is a sand-bottom beachbreak set in a small bay on the Galician coast, well-oriented to pick up W to NW groundswells rolling down the Atlantic seaboard. Shifting a-frame peaks split into punchy lefts and rights, running at medium pace over a well-covered sandy bottom with barrel sections on the better sets. The takeoff is vertical, rewarding surfers who read the sandbar and commit early. Waves work from 1 to 2.5 metres and are most defined from low through mid tide as the banks drain; an optimal NW swell funnels cleanest into the bay with a southerly offshore holding up the faces. Summer fills the small car park and the lineup, though there is usually space to spread along the beach. Lifeguard service, showers and free parking on site. Sandbar layout shifts after every significant swell, so read the lineup fresh on each visit.
