Barrañan is a sand-bottom beachbreak located on the Galician coast a short drive west of A Coruña, facing squarely into the Atlantic's prevailing NW swell window. The break delivers left and right a-frame peaks over a shallow sand bottom, with a critical takeoff that quickly pitches into hollow, fast-moving walls running between 50 and 100 metres before closing out or sectioning. At rising and high tide the banks smooth out and the waves become more structured; lower water exposes the shallow bar and increases the chance of dry-sand wipe-outs. Optimum swell arrives from the NW through N at 0.9 to 1.8 metres, with a southerly wind providing clean offshore conditions. The break is inconsistent in summer when long flat spells are common, but autumn and winter deliver regular quality sessions in the 1 to 2 metre range and above. Being within reach of A Coruña means the peak gets busy on good days, particularly on summer weekends.
