Playa de Esquinzo sits in a natural amphitheatre formed by towering cliffs just before the Esquinzo Canyon, about 5 kilometres south of Cotillo on the northwest coast of Fuerteventura. The cliffs act as a wind baffle, keeping the surface cleaner than exposed beaches nearby even when the trade winds are honking. The break picks up more swell than its neighbours thanks to its open aspect, and responds best to a solid NW groundswell that wraps around the headland and hits the sandbars at an angle, producing fast-running lefts and rights with steep takeoffs. Wave length runs 50 to 100 metres on a decent swell, with flat spots giving way to well-covered, steep walls rather than hollow tubes. The bottom is pure sand, but sandbank quality is seasonal: winter storms regularly scour the beach clean, leaving little to work with until spring banks build back. At 0.6 to 1.2m the wave is playful and forgiving, perfect for surfers progressing beyond whitewash.

Turn south at Cotillo football stadium and follow an unmade track for 5 kilometres to the Esquinzo Canyon. A high-clearance vehicle and a spare tyre are strongly recommended. Free roadside parking at the beach. No facilities on site: no restrooms, showers, lifeguard, surf school or surf shop. Camping is available.
