Cotillo Beach is the main beachbreak at the northwest tip of Fuerteventura, in front of the village of El Cotillo. Sand bottom produces shifting a-frame peaks tracking the sandbanks, scoured away each winter and rebuilt through spring. Wave range is 0.6 to 2.4m. Best on a solid NW swell when banks are formed and size stays below overhead - fast walls peel both ways with barrelling sections on a good bank. Above overhead the beach tends to close out, especially when tide is mismatched with the bank shape. The north end gains shelter from N-NE winds behind the headland, staying workable when exposed stretches south are blown out. E wind is offshore, grooming slopey walls into steeper faces. Consistency is high relative to the island due to the northwest-facing orientation collecting Atlantic swell. Free roadside parking nearby; cliff car parks are a known theft target. Lifeguard operates in season. Crowd runs high given the central village location and limited alternatives nearby.
