Rodiles.

Rodiles is a rivermouth lefthander at the mouth of the Villaviciosa estuary, widely regarded as the best wave in Asturias. The wave breaks over a sand bottom shaped by the outgoing estuary flow, producing long, fast barrels that draw comparisons to Mundaka - the same mechanically sculpted left wall, though Rodiles is slightly shorter and tops out at a lower ceiling of size before it closes out. The wave is hollow and fast from takeoff, requiring a vertical approach at the peak. Wave length runs 200-500m on a good swell. It needs solid NW groundswell with optimal direction around 315 degrees. The window is tight: two hours either side of low tide, preferably on the push. Outside this window the estuary current overwhelms the shape. Swell consistency is moderate; the spot fires properly in winter months. Entry involves reading the estuary rips, which run hard and can pin you against the sand bars if you miss the channel.
