El Mongol is a right-hand reefbreak perched on the eastern edge of Gijon, breaking over an uneven submerged reef that sits well covered at most stages of tide. The wave needs a significant NW swell to wake up, making it one of the least consistent spots on the Asturian coast, but when a proper groundswell arrives from the W through N quadrant it delivers long walls stretching 200 to 500 metres with vertical takeoffs, hollow sections and boil-driven accelerations mid-face. The wave starts working from roughly two metres, producing head-high peaks that quickly become punchy and fast; beyond double overhead it begins to close out, making the optimal window fairly tight. High tide is when the reef is best covered and the sections link most cleanly, with a southeasterly offshore smoothing the faces. The surrounding urban environment means parking is limited and the water carries residential runoff, so timing a session around post-rain days is advisable.
