Luanco, also known as Playa de Santa Marina, sits in a sheltered east-facing bay within the small Asturian town of the same name. The spot is actually two breaks sharing a beach: a shifting sand-bottom beachbreak that produces punchy peaks at low tide, and a secondary righthand reef tucked inside that only activates on the biggest NW-N swells. When the reef fires, it delivers unusually hollow, short walls for an otherwise average stretch of coast - a contrast that makes Luanco worth knowing. Both setups work on low tide only; anything above mid tide sees the banks wash out and the reef go dormant. Wave length is short, rarely exceeding 50m, so expect quick decisions rather than drawn-out walls. Stormrider rates quality as poor overall, reflecting the reef's rarity and the beachbreak's inconsistency - the spot logs a consistency of 2 out of 10. A SW offshore is needed to clean up the faces. The town is compact, parking is straightforward and free, and showers and a lifeguard are on site in season.
