Sanur Reef is an advanced-only outer reef right on Bali’s southeast coast, a fast and hollow wave that needs a large south to south-southwest swell and a rising to high tide.
Sanur is a renowned reef break on Bali’s east coast, famous for its long, peeling right-handers during the dry season and powerful right-hand barrels that come alive during rare, large south or southwest swells, particularly in the wet season. The wave works best with a solid south swell and is most consistent from April to October, offering heavy drops and fast, barreling sections over a shallow reef that often close out on the end section. Access requires a paddle across the lagoon or a short boat ride from the beach, with the lineup known for its competitiveness and strong localism. Crowds can be heavy during peak swell, and the area is popular with tourists due to nearby hotels and restaurants. Sea urchins and sharp coral are common hazards, so booties are recommended. The spot is reserved for advanced surfers because of its shallow reef, powerful waves, and challenging conditions, making it unsuitable for beginners.
