Balian is a river-mouth break on Bali’s west coast that delivers consistent, often uncrowded surf with a mix of left and right-handers. The lefts are typically longer and more consistent, especially on south and southwest swells, while the rights can be punchy and fun. It works on all tides, offering more performance-oriented waves at low tide and mellower conditions at high tide. The bottom consists of boulders, shingle, sand, and stone, making it relatively mellow compared to reef breaks, though access involves navigating slippery rocks and barnacles. Balian is exposed to a wide swell window and is a reliable swell magnet, rarely going flat. Due to the river runoff, the water can be brownish and occasionally polluted after rains. The spot is exposed to wind but can still offer glassy sessions in the early morning. The vibe is laid-back and welcoming, with a mix of locals and traveling surfers. You’ll find a relaxed surf village atmosphere, several warungs and guesthouses by the beach, and paddle access directly in front of the river mouth.
