Tanah Lot is a picturesque surf spot near the iconic Hindu sea temple located on an offshore rock in Beraban village, Tabanan Regency, Bali. The break features left waves off a steep take-off over a coral reef and sand bottom, with short rides of up to about 50 meters, and it suits intermediate and advanced surfers rather than beginners. The wave has to break inside the narrow bay: once the swell is too big it closes out onto the rocks. The spot works best during low and medium tides and is generally uncrowded, offering a more relaxed surfing experience. Access requires navigating rocky cliffs and reefs, so caution is advised. Facilities nearby include showers, restaurants, and surf shops. Visitors should also be mindful and respectful of the sacred nature of the temple area.

Walk about 300 meters north of the temple, to the right as you face the sea, then take the stairs down to the small black-sand bays
Watch a few sets from the stairs before you paddle out: the wave has to break inside the bay or it closes out onto the rocks

Culturally significant and mellow
Access is through the paid Tanah Lot temple complex. Park in the main car park, buy a ticket at the gate, then walk about 300 meters north of the temple, to the right as you face the sea, and take the stairs down to the two small black-sand bays. You get in by jumping off the rock shelf and out by climbing back up the stairs. The complex is one of Bali’s busiest tourist sites, so expect heavy foot traffic around sunset and restricted movement during ceremonies. The temple islet itself is only reachable on foot at low tide.
