Seminyak is a popular beachbreak surf spot on Bali's southwest coast, located just north of Kuta, known for its consistent, mellow waves and sandy bottom that make it safer for beginners. It features A-frame waves offering a variety of wave types, from long shoulders to occasional barrels, suitable for both beginners and intermediates when moderate swells arrive. The surf quality is highly dependent on swell direction, size, and currents, with the best conditions occurring with a southwest swell and light easterly winds. Crowds are typical, especially during the dry season, and surf schools often operate here. The area is lively and easily accessible by road, with abundant facilities, cafes, rental shops, accommodation, dining, and entertainment options right on or near the beach. Early mornings tend to offer the cleanest waves and fewer people in the water.

HAZARDS · KNOW BEFORE YOU PADDLE

Rip currents are the main danger here and have been fatal: a man drowned at Seminyak Beach in August 2025 pulling a child out of a rip, a swimmer drowned at Double Six in December 2023, and the rips get strong enough to stop you holding position in the lineup.
Balawista lifeguards patrol the flagged zones off Double Six and Petitenget, and a red flag means the water is closed.
Shifting sandbars turn from clean A-frames into thumping close-outs once the swell gets overhead, and the shorebreak dumps hard on the inside.
Shallow reef patches show around the Gado Gado peak on lower tides, on an otherwise all-sand bottom.
Surf schools and beginners pack the inside peaks all day, so loose boards and drop-ins are a constant risk.
Water quality drops after heavy rain where the drains and waterways empty onto the beach, and sea lice are flagged along this stretch.
