1st Parking Lot is a sand-bottomed jetty break inside Gateway National Recreation Area at Sandy Hook, one of the first surfable lots reached after entering the park. The wave is medium-paced and well-covered, with slopey, welling shoulders and the odd steeper, hollower section as the bank firms up. Rights are the standout, though lefts also peel when the bank cooperates. It pulls in E through S swell and turns picture-perfect on a low incoming tide with a due W offshore. Sizes typically run between 0.6m and 3m, and waves stay smaller here than at the more exposed Jersey breaks to the south, which makes the inside section a reliable beginner-friendly option when bigger spots close out. Beach access is straight off the lot, but the park charges entry fees and caps numbers in summer. South of the lot the beach narrows and a seawall throws backwash at higher tides.
