National is a sand-bottom beachbreak with shifting peaks breaking both left and right around Long Beach’s man-made groins. Banks can become punchy, fast, hollow, and briefly barrel, especially on meaningful swell. It favors Southeast swell, northerly offshore winds, and rising or falling mid tide. Fall and winter bring the most reliable quality, including hurricane and nor’easter swell, with September particularly worthwhile. This is an intermediate-to-advanced paddle break with a skilled local crew, and surfing access must be confirmed because designated surf beaches can change.
