Coastguards is an exposed sandbar and beach break on Long Island’s south-shore barrier beach near Gilgo. The wave is predominantly a long left over sand with some rock, though rights can also break over boulders. Sections can become hollow, ledgy, and tubular, making advanced ability the cautious choice. South swell with north to north-northeast offshore wind provides the preferred setup. It works year-round, with summer, especially September, offering the most consistent clean conditions. This is a paddle break with low to mid tide generally preferred.
