Rockaway is the city beachbreak for New York, a stretch of sand-bottom peaks running along the south side of the Queens peninsula a subway ride from Manhattan. Waves are usually crumbly, slopey and medium-paced over flat sand banks, with the odd steeper wedge when a sizeable groundswell lines up. It comes alive on solid E through S swells, with bigger E pulses producing the cleaner left walls and a NW offshore tidying the faces in autumn and winter. Tide is a secondary factor, the bank shape on the day matters more than where the water sits. Historically the only legal surfing beach in the five boroughs, it carries an outsized share of the regional crowd and was the launchpad for the modern NYC surf scene. Access is straight off the boardwalk via subway-friendly streets, with roadside parking a few blocks back from the sand. The lineup runs deep with locals, longboarders and dawn-patrol commuters jostling for the better peaks.

Walk-on beach access from the Rockaway boardwalk with free roadside parking a few blocks back from the sand. Vehicle break-ins are reported around the parking blocks. Lifeguard, restrooms, showers and a surf shop are on hand, no surf school listed.
