Surf spot guide · Pais Vasco, Spain
Long, sectiony right point tucked inside the Bilbao rivermouth at Algorta, firing only a handful of times a year on the biggest NW swells.
High Waves
Large waves up to 2.2m expected at Yeffrys. Peak conditions around 9:00 PM.
Exercise extreme caution when entering the water. Strong currents and large waves present. Warning valid until 9:00 PM.
Yeffrys is a long right-hand point break coiling through the mouth of the Bilbao estuary, sheltered by the headland near the town of Algorta. When it turns on, waves peel for 200 to 500 metres, offering extended rides on a crumbly, medium-paced wall that rewards drawn-out carving. The break demands size: it needs the biggest lined-up NW or W swells the Bay of Biscay can produce, limiting it to a handful of sessions per winter. Low to mid tide on a rising push is the window, with a southeasterly wind keeping the face clean. The surrounding estuary carries heavy industrial and residential discharge; bathing is prohibited on neighbouring beaches, so timing and hygiene matter. Parking is easy, with carpark and roadside options available, but the lineup packs out fast whenever conditions align - the entire Bilbao surf community descends when the forecast fires. On the right day it stacks into one of the longer rights in the Basque Country, but those days are rare.
