Menakoz Surf Spot Guide — Pais Vasco, Spain

Menakoz is one of Europe's most powerful and dangerous big-wave spots, sitting on an uneven reef ledge at the eastern end of the Basque Country coast near Sopelana. The break demands a minimum of 3.5m to show its true character, and on W-NW swells of 4m and above it transforms into a thick, square, fast-moving right that barrels from takeoff with little margin for error. The wave is described in Hawaiian terms: steep airdrop entries, heavy hold-downs lasting two waves, and a shallow reef that punishes mistakes with broken boards and broken bones. Crowds are significant when it fires, and locals have zero tolerance for inexperienced surfers in the lineup regardless of wave size. There are no facilities on the beach; parking is at the top of the hill, and shops and a campsite are available in nearby Sopelana. The amphitheatre-shaped cliff setting makes it a world-class spectator venue even on days too big to surf. River pollution from a nearby estuary is an additional concern.
