El Sitio is a lefthand reefbreak at the eastern end of Sopela beach, breaking over an uneven reef in a shallow, steep-faced wall that moves fast and rewards committed surfing. The wave works at low tide only, coming alive on well-lined-up W to NW swells from 1 to 2m. Takeoffs are vertical and the face stays steep through the ride, giving quick, punchy sections over 50 to 100m before closing out. Lined-up westerly groundswells are essential; choppy or crossed conditions kill the wave quickly. A southerly offshore cleans the face when it blows. Crowds stay manageable by Basque standards given the technical nature of the break and the nearby Sopela beach drawing beginners away. Locals can be territorial, so respectful etiquette matters. A sewage outlet sits close by, making water quality a concern after rainfall. Parking has restrictions all year round, with meters in summer. All amenities including a surf school sit at adjacent Sopela.
