Barrika is a beachbreak on the Basque Country coast west of Bilbao, with shifting a-frame peaks that change shape depending on the sandbars. The wave is crumbly and medium-paced on smaller days, with steeper and punchier sections appearing on the better banks. Performance surfing defines sessions here rather than barrels. Low to rising tide is essential: the break closes out above mid-tide as the mixed reef and sand submerges. The spot works best on swells of 0.9 to 1.8m from W through NW, with a southerly offshore holding the faces cleanly during autumn and winter Atlantic groundswells. Bigger swells expose submerged rocks and amplify rip currents. The beach cuts off at high tide, limiting beachgoer traffic and keeping the atmosphere relaxed. Free parking, showers and a seasonal lifeguard are on site. Estuarine outflow from Bilbao and Plentzia creates water quality issues after heavy rain.
