La Galea is a right-hand point break that fires off the rocky Punta Galea headland at the mouth of the Bilbao estuary. The wave needs a big, lined-up W to NW groundswell of at least 1.8m to get going and does not fully come into its own until closer to 2.5m or more. When conditions align, the reef produces fast, thick, square-faced walls with critical takeoffs over super-shallow rock, throwing barrel sections that run 50 to 100m along the point. Offshore is a clean easterly. Low to rising tide is the window -- once the tide pushes too high the wave softens and sections out. The setting is industrial: a clifftop car park, a steep and technical entry and exit, no facilities, and a polluted estuary below. These factors keep the crowd minimal. Because it needs such specific conditions, La Galea fires only a few times a season. On the days it breaks, few waves in the Basque Country are as powerful or as consequential.
