Plentzia is a left-breaking sandbar wedged between a rivermouth and a stone pier on the Basque coast. The wave runs for 50-100m over a shifting sand bottom, offering crumbly, steep-faced walls suited to performance surfing rather than power moves. It only wakes up on large NW swells, demanding patience from regulars who wait for the right combination of size and low to rising tide. Sheltered from westerly winds by the surrounding headland, surface conditions are cleaner here when most of the coast is blown out. Paddle out from the beach beside the pier, reading the current near the rivermouth exit. Pollution is a real concern, drawing from estuarine outflow, residential runoff, and stormwater drains - avoid the water after heavy rain. Crowds peak hard at weekends and in summer when beachgoers fill the bay, but winter mornings can be quieter. Longboarders dominate the lineup. Barrika and El Sitio offer quick alternatives a few kilometres east.
