Bakio is a very consistent beachbreak on the Basque coast west of Mundaka, producing quality a-frame peaks across a wide sandy beach. The wave is shaped by constantly shifting sandbars, meaning the best section can move day to day, but hollow barrel sections are a regular feature when conditions align. The wave is steep, hollow and fast rather than mellow, with both left and right options off the same peak. The spot works on all tides, though incoming tide tends to sharpen the shape. Best swell comes from the west through north window, with southerly winds providing clean offshore conditions. Wave faces run from 0.6 to 2.4 metres, and consistency is exceptionally high for the region. When Mundaka closes out on big swells, the overflow crowd heads to Bakio, so the lineup can get busy. Outside of those big-swell days, the local population is still sizeable. Localism is present but low-key. Facilities are solid: lifeguard cover, showers, and a large car park nearby, though the car park fills quickly in summer.

Bakio draws a large local surfing population year-round, and overflow crowds from Mundaka push numbers even higher on big-swell days. Summer months see additional tourist surfers alongside the regulars.
