Mundaka is widely regarded as the finest left-hand rivermouth wave in the world. A triangular sandbar at the mouth of the Urdaibai estuary collects NW and W swells and transforms them into long, hollow tubes that peel for up to 200 metres at low tide. The take-off is vertical and critical, sucking dry over the shallow bank and launching into a freight-train barrel that demands back-foot commitment. A brief performance wall follows before the wave re-bowls into further cylinders inside. The spot fires on S to SW winds and is highly fickle: rideable roughly 50 days per year, mostly autumn and winter, only from low to incoming mid-tide before the outgoing rip makes the lineup dangerous. The fishing village sits immediately behind the break with a surf shop, camping and parking nearby. The local crew is tight-knit and territorial; newcomers must observe from the harbour wall, show respect in the water, and wait their turn before receiving waves at the peak.
