Laida sits on the southern bank of the Urdaibai estuary, directly opposite the world-famous Mundaka left. A sandy beachbreak producing crumbly, well-covered a-frame peaks suited to beginners and improvers - performance turns and cutbacks rather than barrels define sessions here. The wave works best at low to mid tide, losing shape as the water fills. It needs a solid NW to N swell in the 0.6-1.8m range and a southerly wind to groom the faces. The estuary mouth position gives partial shelter from west and northwest winds that would otherwise make exposed nearby beaches choppy. Access is easiest from Mundaka with a short paddle across the river channel; a summer passenger boat also runs between the two banks. A carpark on the Gernika road side provides a landward alternative. Laida draws little attention given its famous neighbour, making it a genuinely uncrowded option on smaller days when Mundaka is flat or Laga is packed. Estuary runoff raises pollution risk after heavy rain.
