La Arena is a sand-bottom beachbreak on the Basque coast west of Bilbao, producing multiple a-frame peaks shifting with the sandbars. The wave is medium-paced and crumbly, with well-covered faces and an easy entry suited to intermediates. The break handles a wide window from W through NW to N, with NW as the optimal angle for the longest walls at 50 to 100 metres. A southerly offshore is the preferred wind. All tide states produce rideable surf, making this one of the most consistent spots in the region. Facilities are good: car park, camping, lifeguard and showers on site. The main caveat is environmental: the beach sits downwind of a large oil refinery and receives pollution from industrial, residential and stormwater sources linked to Bilbao. Water quality can be compromised after heavy rain. Weekday crowds are moderate; summer weekends bring beachgoers and the car park fills early.
