The reef beneath keeps the wave from becoming pure beachbreak mush -- faces are generally steeper and more defined than the neighbouring sandy stretches, with wave lengths running in the 50 to 150m range on a good day. Low to mid tide is the sweet spot: as the tide drops it exposes the reef influence and sharpens the take-off, while the incoming phase offers a transitional window before the banks fill out and lose their shape. The spot fires on northwest and west swell wrapping around the headlands that define this stretch of coast, with a southerly or south-southeasterly wind keeping faces clean. Despite sitting within 2km of Los Locos and the Suances bay spots, Los Caballos holds a quieter character -- the crowd rarely builds beyond a handful of surfers.
