Santa Marina is a righthand reefbreak off the rocky island of the same name near Loredo, one of the most powerful right-handers on the Cantabrian coast. The wave pitches hard over an uneven reef bottom, generating freight-train walls through barrel sections across a 50-100m ride. Takeoffs are vertical and critical. The wave needs a genuine 1.5m-plus swell from W through NW to fire at all - the optimum NW swell with an E or NE offshore arrives only a handful of times a year, making this one of the rarest setups on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Rocks sit exposed in the take-off zone at low tide and boils run through the inside, so mid to high tide is the practical window. Access is from the shore near Loredo with roadside parking that fills fast on good days - car break-ins are a known issue. The local crew is tight-knit and assertive; observe the hierarchy before paddling to the peak. Stormwater from nearby Santander can affect water quality after heavy rain.
