Ajo is a northwest-facing beachbreak in Cantabria covering two adjacent beaches, Playa Cuberris and Antuerta, sharing the same swell window and sand banks. Pointing into the W to NW Atlantic groundswell corridor, it is one of the most consistent spots in the region and fires when nearby breaks are too small. Both beaches produce a-frame peaks with lefts and rights off a central take-off zone. Banks generate punchy walls running 50 to 100 meters with occasional barrel sections. Best at low to rising tide when shallower banks steepen the faces; high tide fattens and closes out peaks. Optimal swell is 0.6 to 1.8 meters from the NW with a southeasterly offshore. Winter swells can overpower the banks. Summer NE breezes offer partial shelter. The wide beach spreads out the crowd despite easy road access. Rip currents are the main hazard; read them from shore before paddling out. Slight river pollution is present after rain. Free parking, showers, camping, and lifeguard on site.
