La Fortaleza is a lefthand pointbreak that peels over a boulder-and-sand bottom near the fishing town of Santoña. When it works, it delivers some of the longest rides on the Cantabrian coast, with well-covered, crumbly walls running 200-500m from top to bottom at a medium to slow pace. The wave suits cutbacks and drawn-out carves rather than barrel-hunting, with steep sections allowing committed top turns on the better sets. The catch is brutal inconsistency - this spot needs the biggest NW-N swells of the year to activate, and some winters it never breaks at all. Low tide is the only viable window; the wave disappears as the water rises. A clean NW offshore is the ideal companion to a solid groundswell. When conditions do align, crowds pack in hard - the break is widely known in the Basque and Cantabrian surf communities and the lineup fills fast. A strong rip runs the length of the point throughout the session. Pollution from the nearby estuary and residential drainage is a consistent issue, particularly after rain.
