Ris is a moderately consistent sand-bottom beachbreak on Playa de Ris, a broad bay just west of the summer resort town of Noja in Cantabria. The break throws up a-frame peaks with steep take-offs and occasional hollow sections, fed by shallow sandbars that produce punchy walls in the 0.6-1.8m range on a solid NW to N swell. It works across all tides but tideinout data points to the incoming tide shaping the banks best. Southwest winds push straight offshore, cleaning up the faces; westerlies are marginal. The break sits in an open bay with little natural shelter, so it is genuinely dependent on quality groundswell rather than wind chop to produce good waves. Access is simple - park near the beach, walk onto the sand and paddle out. The Cantabrian coast delivers regular autumn and winter NW swells that keep Ris firing in the colder months, while summer tends to be flat and overrun with sunbathers. The nearby village of Noja brings heavy foot traffic in July and August, and weekend sessions year-round draw a crowd.
Shallow sandbars throw steep a-frames across Playa de Ris's open bay.
