Oriñon is a left-hander peeling off the western end of a wide sandy bay where the river meets the sea, producing steep, punchy walls on a sandy bottom. The wave breaks fast with occasional short barrel sections, though it needs a solid NW to N swell to get going - not a spot that fires on small groundswells. Low tide is the only viable window; the bank shallows and the wave steepens as the tide drops, giving the best shape in the final hour before it bottoms out. Stormy winter conditions are the sweet spot, and the wave handles strong westerly and NW winds well. Faces run between 0.3m and 1.8m, with the better surf arriving from 1m upward. The setting is scenic and quiet - crowds are rarely an issue. Getting to the water requires a fairly long walk from roadside parking near the camping area. Strong rips run through the bay and the river estuary degrades water quality after significant rainfall.
