Playa de Los Lances is the town beach of Tarifa, sitting behind the land bridge connecting Isla de Tarifa to the mainland. The break fires hollow, fast peaks over a mixed sand and uneven reef bottom, with a critical takeoff and barrel sections that reward intermediates prepared for a quick entry. Waves run short - typically under 50 metres - but the quality is genuinely good when conditions stack up. The spot is heavily swell-dependent: it needs a strong SW to NW groundswell funnelling through the Strait of Gibraltar with a solid easterly wind to clean the faces. Tarifa is Europe's premier kitesurfing and windsurfing destination, and the same easterly trades that switch on the surf pack the water with non-surfers. Aggressive locals protect the best peaks, and the mix of territorial lineups and cross-sport traffic keeps visiting surfers at the margins. Low consistency means most treat Los Lances as a bonus rather than a primary destination.
