The wave breaks at medium pace with a slopey, well-covered face - forgiving rather than hollow, suited to beginners seeking workable walls. It picks up less swell than El Palmar to the south and Cabo Roche to the north, which is its main value: when those spots are blown out or maxed in strong easterly winds, La Fontanilla stays clean. The levante that plagues the Costa de la Luz is blocked here by the local geography. Low to mid tide produces the best bank shape; high tide compresses the break onto the sand and kills the form. The break sits to the left of the large rocks that divide the beach - follow signs for Playa de la Fontanilla from Conil town. Free roadside parking available. The lineup stays quiet year-round, rarely drawing the numbers that crowd El Palmar on a solid swell.
