Surf spot guide · Andalucia, Spain
Remote, rarely surfed beachbreak between Conil and El Palmar delivering hollow, fast a-frame peaks on Atlantic swells.
Castilnovo is a stretch of open sand beach sitting midway along the sweeping coast between Conil de la Frontera and El Palmar, accessed via a long walk from the Torre de Castilnovo. The break produces a-frame peaks that stand out for their steep, hollow shape and fast wave speed when a clean SW to NW swell rolls in. Wave faces are bowly and well-covered, giving surfers a proper canvas for performance surfing and tube-seeking rather than the relaxed cruising the area is known for. Optimal conditions arrive at low to mid tide on a westerly swell with an easterly offshore holding the faces up. The beach orientation provides reasonable protection from easterly winds but leaves the lineup fully exposed to strong W and NW swells, which can push size up considerably. Wave lengths run 50 to 100 metres on the better days, with barrel sections and vertical takeoffs rewarding committed surfers. The complete absence of facilities and the extended walk-in deter casual visitors, keeping the water effectively empty even during the peak summer season. Rip currents and longshore drift are persistent features of this open beach, so familiarity with the sandbar layout is important. The raw environment is intact, with no development immediately at the break, though historical plans for a hotel at the El Palmar end of the beach have been discussed.
Steep a-frames that hollow fast over sand, rewarding committed surfers with vertical drops.

Effectively empty almost every session. The long walk-in from the nearest access point deters all but dedicated surfers, making solo or near-solo lineups the norm.
