Praia do Baleal is a broad, curving beach break north of Peniche town, shaped by a scalloped bay that creates distinct sections with varying character. The central stretch attracts the most swell energy, producing fast-moving a-frame peaks over a sandy bottom in the 0.6-2.4m range. When solid W to NW swells arrive with offshore southerly winds, the central section fires reliably. On bigger, windier days the sheltered corners of the bay come into their own, offering cleaner, more manageable walls while the main peak turns messy. All tide stages are workable, with incoming tide noted as particularly productive for organising the banks. The beach sits at the base of Baleal island, a distinctive connected promontory that shapes wind exposure and gives the bay its sheltered character on northerly swells. Entry is straightforward across the beach with no rock hazards on the sand; rips can develop during larger swells and tend to push toward the bay margins. The Peniche area surf industry is centred partly on Baleal, with schools operating directly from the beach, which contributes to an often-crowded lineup. Despite Stormrider flagging localism, the environment description notes the scene as relatively relaxed. Supertubos and Molho Leste, both world-class breaks, sit within 2.5km to the south for surfers wanting more challenge.
