Consolação breaks off the southern flank of the headland of the same name, just below Peniche on Portugal's west-facing coast. The main wave is a right-hander running over uneven reef, characterised by steep, fast walls that unwind for 200-500m when conditions align. It handles genuine size - the wave needs at least a solid swell to show its best and can hold well above average when the Atlantic delivers, making it one of the larger-wave venues in the Peniche lineup. North of the headland sits a much more fickle left that, when it appears, runs hollow and heavy, though it breaks far less regularly than the right. The headland geometry provides meaningful shelter from north and northeast winds, the same direction that fires the wave, so offshore conditions here are often cleaner than at the exposed beaches to the north. Best swell windows sit in the SW-to-NW arc, with W the most productive. The spot draws an experienced crowd and localism is genuine - observe the lineup before paddling out. Heavy rips and rock entries demand attention; longer boards give more margin on the paddle. Supertubos and Molho Leste are within 3km for those seeking alternatives on the same swell.
