Zambujeira do Mar sits at the southern tip of the Alentejo coast, tucked into a small cove backed by sandstone cliffs. The headline wave is a wedging left that peels off the cliff base at the southern end of the beach - steep, fast and punchy, it rewards surfers who can commit quickly. A right option also runs from the same peak at times, giving the break its a-frame character, though the left is the more consistent and defined shape. Waves run short, typically under 50 metres, and the sand bottom can shift. The break cannot absorb big swell and works best in the 0.6-1.8m range on a solid NW pulse. Low to mid tide is the window - too much water and the wave loses its wedge. Easterly winds provide clean offshore conditions, and the surrounding cliffs offer natural shelter from southerly winds. Crowds are minimal outside summer free-camping season, when vans fill the clifftop car parks and the water becomes noticeably busier. The beach is reached via a short steep path down from the village. No channel exists, so pick your moment entering and exiting over the sand. The wave suits intermediates comfortable on steep takeoffs.
