The sandy bottom is laced with submerged rocks that require experienced surfers to read the lineup carefully before committing to a section. At its best on a solid NW swell with easterly winds keeping the face clean, the break works across all tidal stages but tends to show its best shape around mid tide. Wave length runs short - typically under 50 metres - so this is not a wave for long, drawn-out rides, but the power and shape it generates on the right day earn it a genuine reputation among Algarve surfers who put in the effort to reach it. Getting here means a long haul down a rough dirt road followed by a hike down a steep cliff face to the beach below. That combination of access difficulty and relative exposure keeps the crowd thin even by west-coast Portugal standards. Rip currents are an ever-present concern, particularly on bigger swells, and the rock scatter across the sand demands respect. Nearby Amoreira and Monte Clerigo offer alternatives if Carriagem is not cooperating, without the same commitment of descent.
