Arrifana.

Arrifana's right-hand point anchors the northern end of the bay and is one of southwest Portugal's most respected reef setups. Waves pitch off an uneven reef bottom, generating long rides in the 200-500m range that combine hollow barrel sections with steep, bowly walls that demand commitment. Boils push up through the shallower zones, creating unpredictable takeoff windows and mid-ride adjustments. The break needs a minimum 1.8m of swell to switch on and handles well above double overhead comfortably, working best on SW to NW groundswell with an easterly wind keeping faces clean. Low to rising tide is the window - pushing too high softens the reef's bite. This is a genuinely world-class wave on its day, drawing experienced surfers from across Europe. The lineup runs hot with locals, travelling regulars and surf school staff competing for a finite number of peaks. Respect the pecking order and observe before paddling out. The beachbreak in the main bay below the cliffs is a separate wave entirely, better suited to intermediates. Parking is available at the clifftop - avoid driving the steep access road. The inside section holds two prominent rocks; identify them from the cliff before entering.
