Praia da Arrifana sits at the base of towering whitewashed cliffs on the Algarve's west-facing Costa Vicentina, a beachbreak that punches above its technical grade through sheer consistency. The sandy bottom produces a mix of crumbly and intermittently hollow peaks that can get fast and steep on the right section, though the beach's main flaw is a strong tendency to close out across its full length as swell size builds - finding a working corner is often luck as much as judgement. A left peeling into the harbour channel at the north end and another down the south end are the most reliable sections, with rights appearing mid-beach on a pushing tide. The break swings into action on SW to W swell and holds shape across all tide stages, while the headland and cliffs provide meaningful NE wind shelter that makes it the default option when stormy northerlies chase surfers off more exposed stretches of coast. That reliability is the double-edged sword: the beach draws heavy crowds year-round, swelled further by a surf school presence that can make the water chaotic. Access requires a long walk down - and back up - a steep path from the clifftop village, where parking is frequently overwhelmed.

Free car park at the clifftop village above the beach, with roadside overflow. Access to the beach requires walking down a long, steep path - and the same back up. The walk is a significant consideration when carrying boards and equipment.
