Surf spot guide · Lombok, Indonesia
South Lombok's most consistent dry-season break is a secluded powerful A-frame reef offering hollow lefts and shorter rights for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Mawi is a swell magnet located about 30 minutes west of Kuta Lombok, Indonesia, breaking from chest-high up to double overhead and changing character with the size. It offers a consistent A-frame reef break with both left and right-hand waves over a sharp coral reef. At head-high or smaller, the right is faster and hollower, while the left peaks into a classic A-frame with playful barrels best at mid tide. On larger swells (overhead+), the left hander breaks further out, providing long, hollow walls and barrel sections for advanced surfers, while the right becomes negligible. Access requires navigating rough roads, and the spot is best surfed at mid to high tide to avoid the very shallow, unforgiving reef found at low tide. Hazards include sharp reef, strong currents, and shallow sections, making Mawi suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. Despite its reputation, it rarely gets crowded due to its remote location and heavy waves, often allowing surfers to enjoy a laid-back atmosphere against a backdrop of rugged hills.
A-frame reef that splits its gifts: hollow right at head-high, long-wall left when overhead.
