Outside Right is a reef break at the outer mouth of Gerupuk Bay (sometimes spelled Grupuk), located at the western tip of the bay on Lombok's southern coast. It offers bigger, faster waves than Inside, with steep takeoffs and fast, hollow sections that can produce barrels on solid swells. This right-hander picks up a lot of swell and is at its best on small to medium swells, as large swells can make it very heavy and challenging. The wave is typically surfed from mid to high tide to ensure sufficient water over the sharp reef, which presents a hazard along with strong currents, making the spot more suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers. There are multiple peaks and takeoff zones, which help spread out surfers and provide different entry points. Access to Outside Right is exclusively by boat from Gerupuk Village, a traditional fishing community with scenic coastal views. The break is less protected from wind, so it’s often surfed early in the day or during periods of light wind, with wet season mornings being ideal. Crowds here are lighter than at Inside Gerupuk, making it a great option for those looking to escape beginners and find more open faces.
