Surf spot guide · Lombok, Indonesia
Awang is a rarely breaking right-hand reef on the west side of Awang Bay in southeast Lombok, offering long bowling walls and tube sections over a shallow coral platform for intermediate and advanced surfers.
Awang sits on the western shore of Awang Bay (Teluk Awang) in southeast Lombok, where the road east from Kuta ends at a quiet, east-facing harbor village. South of the village, long bowling right-handers peel over a shallow coral platform, offering walls and tube sections that reward a committed line. The catch is consistency: the wave needs a rare combination of south to southeast swell and westerly wind, which realistically limits it to the wet season between November and April, when W-NW winds blow offshore on this east-facing coast. It works best from mid to high tide on the push, as the platform gets dangerously shallow below mid tide. Rated for intermediate and advanced surfers, the reef demands respect: sharp shallow coral, sea urchins and rip currents are the main hazards, and sharks have been reported in the bay. The lineup is empty most of the year, though a small crew can appear quickly when it finally breaks. Awang village doubles as the harbor for boats serving the Ekas waves across the bay, so a boat is easy to arrange. Some forecast sites list the break under the name Ampang.
