Surf spot guide · Lombok, Indonesia
A steeper wave requiring a quick takeoff, providing a fast peeling ride with plenty of power, featuring right and left reef breaks in a scenic bay suitable for intermediate to advanced surfers.
Are Guling (Air Guling) is a tranquil bay just west of Kuta on the southern coast of Lombok, Indonesia, known for its clear blue waters and surrounding hills. It offers both a right-hand and a left-hand reef break: the right is longer, more playful, and forgiving, while the left is shorter, faster, more hollow, and shallow. The spot works on all swell sizes and can hold a big swell, but is typically best surfed around mid tide: the right favors low to mid tide, and the left works best on mid to high tide. Are Guling is fairly exposed to wind, so early morning sessions or days during the wet season (October to April) with light offshore north winds provide the cleanest conditions, coinciding with the best swell direction from the south-southwest. Access is possible by paddling from the beach or hiring a local boat. There is a channel in the middle of the bay for paddle-outs, but surfers should be cautious of sharp reef, strong currents, and shallow sections, especially at low tide. Facilities are minimal, so visitors should come prepared. Are Guling often attracts intermediate to advanced surfers seeking powerful, less crowded waves.
