Uluwatu is one of the most famous surf spots in Indonesia, renowned for its consistent and world-class left-hand reef break. The waves work best on a big south or southwest swell, offering multiple sections including Temples, The Peak, and Racetracks. Temples, in particular, features thick, heavy double-up barrels and long, rippable walls that can break for up to 100 meters before shutting down on the reef, with optimal conditions typically occurring on mid to high tide. Access involves a dramatic descent down the cliff and a paddle through caves, which can become more challenging at higher tides due to strong currents. The spot is best suited for intermediate to advanced surfers because of the powerful, heavy waves and sharp reef. Its dramatic limestone cliff scenery and proximity to the iconic Uluwatu temple add to the unique experience. Crowds are common, especially during the dry season when the waves are most consistent, but the wave quality makes it well worth the effort despite occasional unpredictability.
