Nyang Nyang is a secluded surf spot on the south coast of Bali's Bukit Peninsula, at the western end of a long sandy bay under a very high cliff. It is a right-hand reef break over ragged dead coral, with a short shifty left on the side. The rights are fast and punchy, breaking into a channel on small swells and high tides, while at lower tides or on bigger swell the barrel sections turn into close-outs. Occasional barrels form on take-off when it lines up, and the reef sits wide open to the Indian Ocean so it picks up swell when sheltered spots have gone quiet. Wind is the catch. Offshore here is a northerly to north-easterly, which is rare in Bali, so the dry-season south-east trades blow it out and the wet-season westerlies do the same. That makes October to April the season, and a light dawn wind the realistic window, while May to September is usually too big and too windy. Access has changed: a steep paved track now runs down the cliff to warungs and beach bars on the sand, and the crowd has grown with it, drawing local standouts and visiting pros on a small swell. Hazards include strong sweeping currents, sneaker sets, a shallow ragged reef below mid tide, sea lice, and the long climb back up.

Remote and peaceful
Paddle out through the channel on the higher stages of the tide.
Aim for a spring high tide. Around 2 m of tide is optimal here.
Go early. Northerly wind is rare in Bali, so a light dawn wind is the realistic window.
Park at the top of the cliff if you are not confident riding the steep track down.
Bring water and cash in rupiah. Some warungs on the sand do not take cards.
Wear booties or reef footwear for the ragged coral.

Remote and peaceful
A steep paved track runs from Jalan Pantai Nyang Nyang down the cliff to the sand, with parking at the top and warungs at the bottom. Ride down carefully or leave the bike at the top and walk. The climb back up is long and steep either way. The eastern entrance leads to Nunggalan, which is a different break.
