L'Embarcadère.

L'Embarcadère is a right-hand peeler that unwinds from the pier at La Tranche sur Mer along a mixed reef-and-sand bottom. The wave is notably well-covered and wrapping in character, with flat spots and a slopey, medium-speed wall that can stretch out to 200-500m when conditions align. It is a forgiving, accessible ride rather than a high-performance challenge - steep enough to hold shape but never punishing, making it the go-to option when the rest of the Vendée coast is maxed out. Big W swells paired with NW winds are the recipe; without a solid storm swell pushing into the bay the wave rarely materialises, so summers here are almost always flat. Entry is straightforward from the beach near the pier, with the option to walk the shoreline back to the peak rather than paddle against any current. The spot sits at the centre of a long-running dispute between the local Surfrider Foundation chapter and the municipal council, which attempted to construct a breakwater to shelter the moored pleasure fleet - an action that would have permanently altered the sandbars. That political tension reflects how much the local community values the wave. The combination of easy access, manageable size and consistent fun-factor draws large crowds whenever it breaks, and a firmly territorial local crew has established strong priority in the water. Nearby Le Phare, roughly 3km west toward the Pointe du Groin, offers an alternative right on bigger swells for those willing to navigate a rockier lineup.
