Les Grenettes delivers soft, well-covered peaks over a mixed rock ledge and sand bottom on the Atlantic-facing shore of Île de Ré. The break favors a left along the flat reef section, though rights are available off the peaks when conditions align. Waves are mellow and slopey rather than hollow or punchy, with short ride lengths rarely exceeding 50 meters. It responds to a broad swell window from SW through to NW, meaning it picks up a decent range of Atlantic groundswells and local wind chop alike. Offshore winds from the NE keep faces clean. The key tidal constraint is firm: low tide is a no-go, as the rock ledge becomes exposed and hazardous. Mid tide - on the push or the drop - is the window to catch it at its best, when enough water covers the reef to allow clean take-offs without the exposed ledge threatening wipeouts. The north end of the beach is closest to the free car park. Crowds gather regularly, particularly during summer when the island's tourist population peaks. The environment text points directly north to the Gros Joncs stretch where the crowd consistently thins, making it a practical alternative when Les Grenettes is packed. For beginners, the mellow wave face is forgiving, but the submerged rock sections demand awareness - this is not a spot to surf blindly on an unfamiliar tide.
