La Couarde.

La Couarde sits on the north-facing Atlantic shore of Île de Ré and delivers the island's most hollow beach break, though it takes a committed west swell to really show its teeth. Two distinct sandbars form on either side of a wooden jetty in front of the Pergola car park, offering left and right options from a natural a-frame setup. The wave breaks over a well-covered sand bottom with occasional flat spots, producing a slopey, welling character that can turn genuinely hollow when a solid W swell lines things up. In average Atlantic conditions it's a workable, mid-length ride in the 50-100m range; in proper groundswell it becomes the standout wave on the island. Entry is straightforward from the beach, with the jetty serving as a useful orientation landmark — paddle out on either flank rather than attempting the gap between pilings. The break fires best from mid to high tide on incoming water; lower tides expose the sandbars and lose the shape. Down the beach toward Le Bois, reefier peaks add variety when this spot gets crowded, and the Le Gouyot peak near Gros Jonc is worth checking if swell is running. Crowds are moderate for the island but localism has a presence, so a respectful read of the lineup before paddling out goes a long way. Solid intermediate wave — the hollow sections and rip potential make it unsuitable for beginners.
