Saint-Nicolas, also known locally as Plage de la Mine, is a left-hand reef-and-sand break tucked along the Vendée coastline south of Les Sables-d'Olonne, close to Parc de la Grange. The wave unloads over an uneven mix of reef and sand, producing rides in the 100-200m range that start hollow and steep before easing into a more slopey, welling section further down the line. The depth profile is well-covered with flat spots, giving the wave a medium-paced tempo rather than a raw slab character - intermediate surfers can build confidence on the longer walls while the hollow entry keeps things honest. It comes alive on solid NW swells and needs the tide on the way in to fill the reef correctly; incoming to high is the window, with the wave softening and lengthening as the water rises. SW swell also works but NW is the cleaner angle. A right-hander sits north of Jard for those who bother to explore. This is deliberately low-profile - part of a loose cluster of semi-secret spots between Jard-sur-Mer and Les Sables that locals guard carefully during good storm swells. The break does not appear on most tourist maps and that is intentional. The local crew is territorial and the vibe reflects that; newcomers who observe quietly and wait their turn fare better than those who paddle straight to the peak. Consistency is modest - it needs real swell energy to switch on and can sit flat for extended periods outside autumn and winter.
